Suburban Life–in the time of Covid

How I found refuge during this strange chapter of our lives

As someone who moved from the New York City to Westchester County a mere 18 months ago, I’m embracing this new-found reality of living in suburbia and all it offers.

Nature and greenery has always had a warm and welcoming impact on me. After all, my childhood was spent on a 72-acre farm in West Wales.

The nearest town of over 20,000 population was 60 miles away — to give some sense of the isolation… cough cough –I mean glorious panorama we lived in.

But truly, it was a beautiful existence, although a little quiet for our teen years.

When I first moved to Westchester I was still working 60–70 hours a week in the city, and so the more rural aspects of this new life were having less impact on my life. Sure, I was spending more time in nature at the weekend, but probably not enough to garner the benefits of a slower lifestyle.

When the pandemic began to feel visceral as a real-world crisis in New York City— in my case by March 15th, I stopped working due to safety issues. Our entire household (I live with friends) was smart and responsible, locking ourselves away from the world.
