My Co-Dependent Relationship With Pets

And I’m just fine with that…

Present me with a furry animal and you can leave me alone for ten minutes, totally absorbed in my connection with the little beast.

Okay, if I had to be more specific, my bonding historically has been with mammals. Snakes, insects — Really not my thing.

(Be warned — name-dropping opportunity I couldn’t ignore). I was once at Billy Idol’s house (long story) and his female entourage was handing around a long, thick snake and wrapping it around their necks, cooing away. Me? — Not for a million bucks…

So, what is it with animals…?

Well, and I realize this sounds immature, possible infantile, but I personalize them. In other words, I superimpose on them this idea that they’re a caricature of a human, which makes them even funnier and cuter in my mind.

And who wouldn’t love a human that was furry, chasing his/her own tail, grunting in an anti-social manner, chasing anything that moves — Cute, right?

And animals can lift my spirits faster than any human. I can be in a surly mood, but not when I’m with my pets. The weight of the world is suddenly lifted and I get a reprieve from those pressures in life.
