Healthcare, Healthcare —Wherefore Art Thou?
The U.S. healthcare system stinks
Kanye’s not right very often.
But if there’s one thing Kanye’s did have right, it was the accusation of George Bush and the government that they didn’t care about Black people. He could have added ‘’poor people” and been just as correct.
We can surely add the working-class, and possibly the lower-middle and middle-class to this.
And the ‘living embodiment’ of this sentiment for me would be the U.S.’s healthcare system.
Let’s take the biggest challenge in recent (current) history… in our time of COVID.
During COVID-19, anyone who suddenly lost their job because of its impact, either immediately lost their health benefits or needed to pay more for the same benefits they had prior. (COBRA —don’t you just love it?)
So for that one time in their lifetimes when they most need healthcare, they find themselves at their most vulnerable in years. Seems like a harsh response to having paid into a health system for years if not decades. I mean, what else does one have to do to stay insured during a crisis!
I throw my hands up in despair and frustration. I just viscerally feel the unfairness of this.
